Our new FREE to access Visitor Centre is home to a Stylish Restaurant, Gift Shop and Exhibition on the life and legacy of Sir Walter Scott. The House will remain closed until 2013 to allow for an extensive programme of much-needed repair and refurbishment.Perhaps nowhere else in the world can evoke the power of the romantic past more than Abbotsford, stunningly located on the banks of the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders. Abbotsford sits at the heart of the landscape that inspired the poetry and novels of its creator, Sir Walter Scott. Unlike the homes of other great writers, this is a house that the writer himself designed and as such uniquely embodies a physical representation of the Romantic Movement that he helped to create. When you touch the bricks and mortar of Abbotsford, you are touching the soul of Scott.

"We parked right outside - free. The Heritage staff lady was very well informed and advised that we would probably encounter both Kelso Pipe Band and a wedding taking place in a while. We explored with the audio guide and sat in the shade of ancient walls as the bridal party arrived looking delightfu..."l.
A lovely place to linger, explore and picnic.

"Set off the main A68 by about 10 minutes it is a worthwhile drive (georgeous vistas and scenic road driving in). Abbey is not as complete as others, but it is well maintained, has good info placards, and is full of history and Scott's grave site. Only negative, 10p for a toilet. But assuming they..." did that to keep the non visitors out.

"Joined Historic Scotland here. The guide, Mary was chatty, friendly and helpful. Beautiful spot and we had fantastic weather too. The castle is large and steep steps inside allow views to otherwise unseen aspects. We will definitely return especially in different weather conditions. Information boar..."ds are clear and concise, with great diagrams and drawings. Lots of space for children to run about and play.
Give it a go, if you like ruins, history and windswept views then this is for you.
