Covering 28,000 acres, and receiving more than 200 inches of rain per year, El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rain forest in the US Forest System. Noted for its biodiversity, the forest is home to more than 400 different plant species. It has more than a dozen maintained trails for hiking, picnic pavilions, stone towers, rivers, waterfalls, and an interpretive visitors' center.

Balneario Monserrate, often referred to simply as Luquillo Beach, is a long cresent of fine sand, with plenty of mature palm trees for shade, and El Yunque National Forest in the background. Due to a fringing reef, there are no waves to speak of, so it's a perfect beach for young kids. The beach has some food kiosks, restrooms, changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards. There is a small fee to park in the gated parking area.

"We visited this beach and based on what we saw it was the best beach on mainland Puerto Rico. To enjoy this beach I highly recommend parking in the pay parking lot, which costs approximately five dollars. The pay lot puts you right at the best part of the beach with all of the amenities. The beac..."h has a bath house that you pay $1 per day to use. The cost of use is very justifiable as the beach house is well staffed and very clean. I felt very comfortable that my family would feel safe and appreciated this nice amenity. There is also a place to rent lounge chairs and umbrellas for the day, which again makes this a nice place to go with your family. Finally there was a small store to but sun tan lotion, sand toys, etc. You can literally show up at this beach with a bathing suit and a towel and have a great day. I would highly recommend for families.
The water is crystal clear and calm and has a light blue tint. The ocean is not as blue as you will find in Culebra or some oth...

"We visited the rain forest and we thought it was the highlight of our trip to Puerto Rico. We simply drove up to the main visitor center to get a map and then toured the various attractions on our own. I really don't see any need to pay for a travel guide assuming you have a rental car. You can s..."imply drive up to the visitor center and then tour each individual site including Coco Falls and La Mina falls. If you go on the weekends you can pretty much just follow the crowds. Each of the notable attractions is well marked along the road up El Yunque.
We hiked to La Mina Falls with our 4 year old and 6 year old and they were able to handle the hike just fine. We absolutely loved swimming in the waterfall and would highly recommend you give it a try. I think the entire trip cost us about 5 bucks as we packed our own drinks, etc. We did enjoy lunch from one of the food vendors outside on of the stops. Be prepared to get wet as this is a rainforest and even on a sunny day a rain sh...

"We spent a full day here and barely scratched the surface. One of the best times we've ever had. Wear your best walking shoes, since you'll be doing a lot of that, and allow plenty of time for your visit. Fabulous scenery. The waterfalls were amazing. We did not take an organized tour. We stop..."ped at the visitor's center and got information there regarding trails, etc. and just drove ourselves around. Would go back to Puerto Rico again just to see this.
