A large, torii gate stands at the entrance to this shrine built in memory of those who lost their lives defending Japan. Many officials still come and offer prayer annually on August 15, the anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War II.

"This is a don't miss in Tokyo. Most of the palace grounds are closed to visitors, but this is a huge garden with some spectacular displays, particularly the iris gardens. There are also massive displays of azaleas, a rose garden, and a bamboo garden. Admission is free; you pick up a token at the ..."entrance and return it when you leave at any other entrance. There a number of buildings including guard houses, a tea house, and a theater. None of the buildings (except the Imperial Collections Museum) are open to visitors, but there are a few rest houses where you can buy a drink or souvenirs. Just getting close to the massive stone walls is a thrill.

"Yasukuni Shrine honors the dead of Japanese wars from the Meiji Restoration onward. It even has statues dedicated to the horses and dogs that died in the wars. It's controversial since the shrine contains a museum that takes a rather retrograde view of that rationale for these wars. I didn't both..."er with the museum, but enjoyed wandering the large grounds covered by the shrine, particularly the peaceful park in back of the the shrine buildings. Japanese soldiers used to say "Let's meet at Yasukuni." before going into war, so this shrine occupies a unique place in Japanese history. It's a short walk from the Kudanshita station.

"My wife and I love Japanese food and before we went to Tokyo, were looking for a way to take something authentic home with us. This was the perfect experience! It was very easy to find off the subway and the Host Ayuko was very friendly, easy to talk to, and very good English!
We took the Udon noo..."dle class and had a great time making them from scratch and cooking. It was somewhat simple and good recipies. When we finished cooking, we couldn't believe that we made it! We would definitely recommend this as part of your Tokyo and Japanese experience!
