Earliest remains at the site date back to about 4000BC, and the complex was used over a span of many centuries, up to c. 2500 BC. The Hypogeum was first opened to the public in 1908. Due to its uniqueness, the site became very popular with visitors. Unfortunately, this had a negative impact on the delicate microclimate of the site. For this reason, a conservation project was conducted that also included the closure of the site for 10 years between 1990 and 2000. As a result of these studies, a new visiting system was established. Nowadays, only 10 visitors an hour are now allowed inside the Hypogeum for a maximum of 8 tours a day. This system is also complemented by an environmental control system which keeps temperature and humidity at required levels.Tickets for the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum should be bought well ahead of the chosen visiting date since tours are often fully booked weeks in advance. For more information visit Heritage Malta's website. « less

This was recommended by my friend who came last year. And I wasn't disappointed at all. But the ticket to the Hupogeum has to be purchased months before. You have to book a certain timing depends on the availability, apparently it's limited to 10 persons an hour, it was said to control the amount of carbon dioxide in the air... More

Tickets for this are hard to come by, but if you haven't booked online in advance then it is possible to queue early at the Museum of Fine Arts and get some of the issue of 20 tickets released each day for the following day. The cost of 25 Euros per person is well worth paying. We found the Hypogeum... More

Amazing to venture underground to visit a city built for the dead over 5,000 years ago. Tickets are sold out months in advance but are simple to purchase on line. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and only 10 people per hour are allowed inside the protected environment with maximum of 80 per day. We took the bus from... More

the three stoneage sites at paola hagarqim and darsalem are overpriced and not worth the visit unless interested in neolithic age. i visited the hypogeum with two friends after pre-booked tickets weeks in advance. one of my friends had to missout due to overbooking by officials. i played as a child in the hypogeum and wanted to show them around.... Hard to book (do it on line, at least three weeks before you arrive), easy and cheap to arrive by bus from La Valletta (direction Paola), Hypogeum is a must see place in Malta. After visiting the temple (fix duration of one hour, well presented and available for each single person in his/her chosen language from at least 6), you... More

This was a captivating visit. The initial short exhibit followed by the audiovisual were a suitable introduction to the wonders that followed. We found the visitor flow through the underground levels very effective and the audioguides informative. The movement was un-rushed and we found we had sufficient time to stop and examine the various caverns and artefacts. We marvelled at... More

We booked in advance before our trip (as you pretty well have to do to ensure you can get tickets) and very much enjoyed our visit here. Incredible that so much history is hidden below the humdrum streets of Paola - you really do enter a different world altogether. My only issue is that the 10 people allowed down each... More

A must if you're interested in the Neolithic. I purchased tickets online well before going. They only allow a few people in per visit, because of the damage caused by moisture from breath. The tickets are not included in the Malta Heritage Pass, so need to get separately. Rather hard to find, as on a non-nondescript street with little signage... More

MUST MUST MUST book as long in advance as possible (20Euro)!!! We visited off-season so we were lucky enough to be able to purchase tickets (25Euro) in the morning in the Museum of Archaeology in Valletta (had to walk around a bit to find this one too). Then took a bus to Paola, bus driver showed us where to get... More

Mostly importantly you must book in advance. It can be a challenge to find because so many people walk right past the small entrance doorway. Check it out on the Internet before you go. If ancient history is not your interest don't bother. If it is you'll love it.
