We spent 2 nights camping in front of the lake at the Koala Bungalows campsite. The cost was very reasonable; 100 pesos per adult and 50 pesos per child. The campsite offers fire pits plus wood that could be purchased for a reasonable price, decent bathrooms, grills in various places around the site, kayaks for rent, an on-site restaurant, bungalows... Yesterday, we took a one day trip to the lake of Santa Maria del Oro Nayarit; we've heard it is a beautiful site and we were shocked by its beauty, driving from Puerto Vallarta, we stopped in Compostela for breakfast and 35 minutes later we got to the lake, before the drive down the hill, there is a viewpoint which... Santa Maria Del Oro is located 1 hour north of Guadalajara, it is a small town with a beautiful lake situated in a basin. The lake changes colour daily due to the minerals and can be green, blue and brown all in 1 day. There is a great campsite with friendly staff, which is cheap at 50 pesos per night... More

My wife and I stayed at Koala Bungalows for three nights. We enjoyed the hikes around the volcano crater lake and nearby streams. I am a birder and there were great birds here including Black-throated Magpie Jay and Elegant Euphonia. The climate (in March) seemed ideal, highs in the upper 70's to 80 and lows in the 60's. The lake... More

We stayed at Koala Bungalows, a budget hotel at the lakes edge. (On the left on arrival to the lake) Our bungalow (700 pesos per night) had a view of the well tended gardens and lake and we ate at koala's charming restaurant "La Mojarra de Samao" run by Christian, the owner's son. The owners and staff were very friendly... More

You make your way through the small town and get to an observation post for the lake- you make your way down the paved road (15 minutes) and you arrive to one of mexicos paradise. It's 2 hours from Guadalajara, it's a lake aprox. 3km large which is in the crater of an old volcano, there are a lot of restaurants and a beutiful hotel, where you can rest and practice water sports. Its not expensive an it's worth it.
