Monreale's exterior is quite plain and belies the wonderful mosaics on the walls inside. Next to the Duomo is its cloister with many interesting architectural features. Well worth visiting.

Our GPS malfunctioned and we relied on a kind lady to guide us to this Treasure!!! Wow! Totally knocked over by the preserved state of the mosaics on the upper walls. You can"t help gawking and unconsciously, your mouth goes agape as you take in all that visual overhead overload!
And dont miss the monastery nearby! The inner courtyard"s exquisitely...

I find it pretty easy to get "duomo'd" or 'cathedral'd" out when visiting Europe, but the Duomo di Monreale is absolutely worth the trip. The mosaics in this church are stunning. What I found particularly interesting are the Old Testament stories, presented here to tell the stories that worshippers couldn't read as they were illiterate. They're beautifully rendered as are...

Absolutely gorgeous church! Extremely decorated chuch with lots of details, especially on the ceiling. Would love to be in this chuch during a mass. Backside of the church is definitely worth seeing.
We were staying in Palermo and Monreale is only about 40 minutes away. I immediately was taken back by the beauty of this hill town. The Duomo was exquisite, the mosaics told hundreds of bible stories that I so enjoy reading and re reading during the year.
The amount of gold and silver in this church is mind blowing. The history of the creation of the world in pictures is awe inspiring. The interaction of Greek, Jewish, Arab architecture is amazing. A guide is of a benefit
When we arrived at the duomo in Monreale we were a bit disappointed. No grandeur at all, it appeared to be one the average churches we have seen in so many places. But then came the big surprise when we entered the duomo. So impressive, bigger then expected and then the interior. The walls are covered with mosaïc . Not...

I had dreamt of this place for a long, long time. I had wanted very much to see the incredible mix of art and culture
The cathedral at Monreale is a fusion of Christian and Arab styles unlike anything you will see elsewhere. Somewhat removed from the city of Palermo (for historic reasons), it is well worth the effort to visit. Adjunct to visiting the cathedral are panoramic views of Palermo.
If you are traveling by car, the narrow, winding roads in the city of...

Highlights include the gold mosaics lining the ceiling in the nave and the heavy Norman architecture. The hidden gem though, is the intricately designed cloisters. Climb to the top of the cathedral and look down on the cloister to see a beautiful view. The village surrounding the duomo is nice as well.
