A Must adventure ! At my older age , when younger I rode the real coal fired engined trains - and loved the experience . These engines are converted to oil fired so you are not breathing coal smoke . You haven't ridden a real train until you have ridden on a Historical Puffer Engined train ! The engines and... More

We moved to South Dakota a little over a year ago and have been eagerly waiting to ride the train. Our four kids were super excited about it, as were we. The train itself is very nice, clean and comfortable. You can hear a little bit of prerecorded history via the speakers throughout the train. Seats are not saved, it... More

This train takes you from Keystone SD to Hill City SD and back. Inbetween you have a few hours in Hill City which has some art galleries, restaurants and gift shops. Try the Alpine Inn if you like German food or big sandwiches. Their apple strudel is some of the best I have tasted. But bring cash -- they do... More

Our ride started in Hill City and went to Keystone, South Dakota. This was a warm summer day and the open windows of the train let you know right away, there was no air conditioning on this old ride! The train itself if in great condition for it's age and the staff was very friendly. Not only get we get... More

We both really enjoyed it, even the return trip (in which the route is the same). The ride is just over 2 hours, between Keystone and Hill City. The cars and steam engine were restored and kept up in very good condition, and the narrator was very interesting. It was neat to step back in time. My husband went into... More

I actually previewed this train ride on a PBS documentary.... deceptive editing led me to believe that it was routed through pristine wildeness with breathtaking vistas. What I got was 75% peoples backyards, swing sets and plastic Playskool playhouses, 25% decent scenery. Drat. The train does not turn around for the return trip... the train seats have pivots that allow... More

This train ride had so much going for it we enjoyed the entire ride. It was on time and there was comfortable seating for everybody. The views were beautiful. The locomotive and coaches were restored beautifully. It was obvious the mechanical maintenance was done frequently and correctly. The surrounding grounds of the depot and tracks were immaculate and very well... More

The antique train is charming and well maintained, and the staff were well organized and courteous. The scenery was enjoyable, but, in retrospect, it would have been much more enjoyable for me it I had visited the museums in Hill City rather than taking the two-hour round trip by train between Hill City and Keystone. The first 30 minutes was... More

I got to the boarding area several hours in advance. As I was waiting for the train to arrive, I sat down and had a light lunch at a small diner that catered to the train's visitors. During the time I was enjoying my meal outside, I noticed alot of smoke coming from a locomotive that was warming up just... More

Rick, Thank you for taking the time to review our train ride. We are sorry to hear that you had an adverse reaction to the smoke from one of our steam locomotives. We were concerned to hear that you did not receive a full refund on your train ride, so we pulled up your reservation right away. Our records show... More

The round trip from Hill City to Keystone and back was a great color tour in the cool of autumn. We enjoyed the ride so much that we took two rounds of house guest within a month of each other.
