13 miles of hiking trails surround the James River. Only class five rapids within a city center in the country.

Why I don't visit the James more often is a mystery to me. That's why I've put it on my to-do list. The many trails, the beautiful vistas and the beauty of nature is all yours. Free. What could be better than that? OK. Better parking could be better than that. But it's still easy to get many of the... More

It's the BEST Richmond has to offer! Swim, fish, canoe, kayak, hike, LEARN and more! Look up 'Ralph White', an amazing and dedicated James River advocate who has taught us about the intrinsic beauty, diversity and IMPORTANCE of our river!

Urban playground. America's best inner city white water (and summer tubing). Mountain biking courses for beginners and experts on Belle Isle. The river and its miles of trails are the site for The Exterra's only urban event. Dog friendly.

Down is Shockoe Bottom you can walk through the flood gates onto the canal walk in Richmond. It is probably one of the nicest places to walk that no one knows about that I have ever, ever seen. If you are in or near the area you should treat yourself. Walk all the way to the Civil War museum and... More

The richmmond parks has done a great deal to clean up the river and make paths and bike trails to enjoy the outdoors.

The James River is an integral part of Richmond. Many, many activities during the summer..Folk Festival, Chili Cook-Off things like that. Many good restaurants near the river. Kayaking, canoeing, biking, walking are activities we participate in.

Do not miss the murals at the power plant. This is a gem that too many locals miss. It is a real treat to be on the Riva'. The James is wild and gentle; rocky and smooth bottomed. It just depends on what you want and you can find it mandering along the James.

We walked across the bridge to Brown's Island, and across another bridge to get a great view of the James River. If there were benches up there, I could've sat there all day! :-)
