I agree with AmyWren in that there is not a lot of history provided. I had done a lot of research, so knew quite a bit, but hoped I would learn more about this fascinating place--I didn't. However, it was still fascinating. My one real regret is that there seems to be so little of the original colony's building left.... More

We hiked the trail and took in some great views. The trail is shady and flat till the cliff edge, where there are dramatic views of the coastline. The national park and former Hanson's Disease colony is on a lava outcrop that erupted from the side of the volcano. The book Molokai by Alan Brennart gives a great history of... More

I had read "Molokai" by Alan Brennart and other literature before going to Molokai and wanted to see this National Park before there might be changes that might influence how it will be in the future. We were glad we took the mule ride (see separate review) although we are both fairly fit hikers. The grounds were well cared for... More

It was very interesting to tour Kalaupapa and see what life is like for the current residents, but there was not a lot of history provided on the tour so do your reading before you go.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Kalaupapa. After reading reviews and trying to decide whether to hike, take the mules, or fly, we decided to hike down and fly out. This turned out to be a great option. We were able to set this up with Makani Kai Air Charters which offers routine service to/from topside Molokai and Kalaupapa, which... More

After touring Father Damien museum in front of St Augustine by the Sea church in Waikiki, noticed two brochures for tours of the old leper colony. One even has a discount for those who have been to museum. Took the Hawaii Expedition& Adventure Company tour(808-349-3006) which picks you up and returns you to your hotel. Was a 10 seater prop... Wife and I planned to do the hike, if nothing else. After three days of rain and the trial shut down for a couple of days, then friends visiting, we finally make the hike. We are both 50 and in moderate shape, we can do 5k's and tried to prep on the treadmill with incline. We live in a relatively... More

I went to Moloka'i primarily to visit this National Park. I was not disappointed. It is tough to get to. First off, getting to Moloka'i can be a challenge. I believe flights only come in from O'ahu now. You can take a boat from Lahaina, Maui, that offers great whale-watching in winter months. Once on Moloka'i, you have three options... More

There is a lot of history here to say the least. It is worth the cost to take the tour because you won't see views like this any place else.

Kalaupapa National Historic Park is a really amazing park. First, it’s ridiculously beautiful on the Kalaupapa peninsula! Then there is the crazy fact that it is not an easy place to get to. You will either hike down a 1700 foot drop by hitting 26 switchbacks for 3.4 miles or you’re flying in. Last, its history has tragedy & seclusion,... More
