We were quite surprised by this tour. Really first rate. Narrated and stops along the route to watch a plane take off and land in the river, dog sled operations (Susan Butcher's husband), see typical homes. Stopped at the Athabascan village to see how native Indians used to live. Free coffee & donuts :-) Very smooth sailing on 1 of... More

The Riverboat Discovery tour was included with our Princess Land-Cruise package & I wasn't looking forward to it. I was extremely pleasantly surprised and would recommend this tour to anyone. Our tour started with the beef stew in the luncheon hall & one of my friends who is a picky eater, liked it so much she mentions it every so... More

I have taken this tour and was so impressed. In fact, I have added this attraction to my group tour this coming June. Knightly Tours in Seattle customized our trip. I had to add Riverboat Discovery to the itinerary along with Ice Museum, Gold MIning, University of Alaska Museum and a show at the Palace Theater. The experience that you... More

At first, like all tourist attractions, this paddle-wheel boat tour had me wondering if this was going to be the "Real Deal." As it turned out, this tour wasn't just a riverboat tour on an authentic paddle-wheeler, it was also a historic lesson - which included information about the boat, the river, the region, the Athabaskan people of the area,... August 2012: This is a pretty well packaged tour. For all that it is as touristy (it starts in a gift shop, and offers options to buy all sorts things along the way), we still were charmed by the whole experience. The guides at the Indian village were charming and engaging, and we did learn quite a bit in a... More

What a total waste of time and money. Found it all contrived to the point of being insulting. I have to give the people who own this business credit though. They have one heck of a cash cow going. Since there aren't any other attractions in Fairbanks, it's easy to sell this.

The Riverboat Discovery excursion is loads of fun. A scenic cruise down the Chena River to its confluence with the Nenana and back with stops along the way. Running narration as you go. Radio communication with the shore provides demonstrations and commentary from a bush pilot, the Trailbreaker sled dog kennel, and an Athabascan fisherman. Gift shop aboard the boat.... More

This boat trip along the Chena river is a mix of scenery, history and culture. You get to see the beautiful Alaskan landscape, traditional salmon fishing and smoking, hear about Susan Butcher - the Iditarod champion and her unimaginable courage and experience the life of an Athabascan Indian village.

This is a "must do" when in Fairbanks. Its not just a boat trip, theres lots to see on the river bank, including a float plane take off and landing. We saw the dog sled racing. We spent time in a heritage village with very informative staff showing us how the people lived, displaying their clothes etc. Great fun
