Reports on a visit to the Abyssinian Baptist Church are varied and I understand poeple's concerns. We went to the 7pm service on a Wednesday night; this is a very good alternative. It is a little more relaxed, only goes for an hour but still maintains the spirit of the occassion. The singing was magical and enthralling with an excellent... More

I had read many comments about overcrowded Harlem on sundays, so I chose to go there for the Midweek Manna Service at 6.30pm with my family. We took the subway to 135th street station and in a couple of minutes you reach the church. I have to say that the persons outside that check visitors and their bags are the... More

The service was very well organized, and I believe they handled the tourist extremely well. The music was good as it reflected Old Harlem and real traditional Black church Worship. Dr. Butts presented a well crafted sermon on Justice as Justice will not happen until Christ comes back However, the greatest Pastor, Preacher, and Music in Harlem is Dr. V.... More

I have to agree we were treated rudely. They were happy to check my hand bag, but wouldn't allow my husband to conceal his back pack under his coat. The worst display of non Christian behaviour I have ever seen. Perhaps they should display the rules when people line up or be more specific on the website, they are not... More

I have to agree with the previous comments - I think we were there the same weekend. My family arrived 1 hour before the service and had the same experience in the line waiting to enter. As their are 6 of us, we arrived in two cabs. My wife arrived 5 minutes before me and stood in line. We joined... More

I can completely understand if a Church wants to avoid too many tourists and has some rules in this way. I can also understand there's a dress and respect code. But I can't tolerate the rude way I was treated by the front door woman at the Abyssinian Church last Sunday. She told me I was not properly dressed, even... More

we were so excited to see a gospel choir in ny, and our first choice was abyssinian. well, they were so rude, they treated us so badly we didn't even bother to stay on the huge line to enter the church. it could be the best choir in town, the most beautiful church or whatever, but no way we would... Terrible experience. Appealing organization with totally incompetent and rude ushers, insulting everybody, counting nobody knows what. Result is 2 hours of wait for nothing, with children and only one memory ; never again

We arrived at the church at 9:30 a.m, and were immediately directed to the end of a line. Over the next two hours while standing on the sidewalk outside the church, orders were barked at us, including "stand next to the building," "stand two by two" "don't take any photos whatsoever," You aren't dressed properly, step out of line," "this...
