My family and I went to the beautiful Castro theater during our last trip to SF and absolutely loved it. First off, it is amazingly beautiful. You tend to forget how beautiful movie theaters were back in the day, and how movie going was an experience. An organ emerged onto the stage and the beautiful sounds bounced off of the... More

A left-over single screen from the golden era of cinema. The interior is decorated artistically and they even has a real live organist who appears and disappears on a elevator platform before each movie. The films are old, modern, genre specific, classic, noir, etc...always a treat.

Went to singalong "Beauty and the Beast" on a recent visit to San Fran, against the strenuous objections of my teenage daughter. Not sure who had the best time-she and my husband were both singing, blowing bubbles, hissing at Gaston... The theater itself is gorgeous, the organ sounds great (and I'm not usually a fan.) I imagine anything you see... More

Want to hear an movie organ in all it's grandor? The Castro opens it's movies with the organ rising up through the stage and a sing along to start the evening. The host such fun things as Sound of Music sing-a-longs. Even without all the extras it is a fine old theatre to enjoy a movie in.

This is the most beautiful movie theatre in a vibrant area. They show movies in general release and also classics. Love it.

Was staying in the neighbourhood, so it was convenient, but I would have come from across the city to see a movie at this beautiful old theatre. There are fewer and fewer of these great old cinemas still in operation in North America, as all of our old, character-filled, one-screen cinemas close and are replaced by those huge, soulless, unpleasant... One of the best shows in all of San Francisco - family friendly and lots of fun. Go early, as the lines can get very long.

I like anything vintage in good condition. It shows people care about their history and past. This theater has a facade that I could gaze at for a while admiringly.

An iconic symbol for the nieghborhood outside, inside it takes you back to a golden age when films were shown in palaces. If your lucky before your film the grand organ will be playing before sinking into the stage. Check their schedule, they play old films as well as current releases.

The Castro Theater is historic and gorgeous! A live person plays the organ before movies and it is a flashback to the golden age of Hollywood. They show all kinds of films here, from the San Francisco International Film Festival red carpet events, contemporary movies such as Milk. And best of all they do campy fun screenings such as sing-a-long... More
