After seeing this location in the guidebook, finally located in a poor area of town. The gates were locked and there was a sign indicating it was a private cemetary, so did not get to see. Why list?

I always love visiting cemeteries when I visit a new country or a different part of a country. Cemeteries reveal a lot about local culture. Elmwood is well kept and you can see some important names on the gravestones

Fascinating, Memphis History all in one location. Beautiful surroundings. Historical graves. A park like setting. Early Memphians would take a trip to the "country" to visit relatives or just enjoy the outdoors. Tours are available. School groups visit to take rubbings of the markers.

Interesting monuments also arboretum. Check in at cottage. If you are interested in the trees get a tree guide $3. Plan on 2 hours if you are interested in both graves and plantings.

We bought a $10 CD at the cemetery entrance which gave a guided auto tour through the cemetery. The CD narration was filled with lots of wonderful historical information about the cemetery and the people who are buried there. This was definitely a highlight of our recent trip to Memphis!

A lot of history, information and sights. You will learn about why cemeterys are plotted different in modern times. The social differences and really interesting is the meaning of symbols used as memorials, monuments, or tombstones. Check hours before you go. Pretty plants marked with names as well.

A couple of hours of beauty, history, and relaxation. Crossing the bridge into Elmwood is the perfect start for the tour. Stop at the cottage, pick up the tour CD, and go back in time. We went on a rainy Thursday, we were the only tour on the property. It would have been wonderful to see the giant magnolias in... More
