People do not realize that after the battle of midway the Japanese Navy was way more powerful than ours, and at Santa Cruz the Enterprise probably would not have survived without the South Dakota by her side, and South Dakota went to the Battle of Guadalcanal with damage from a bomb hit at Santa Cruz. The ship fought throughout the... More

As hard as it is to believe, South Dakota hosts relics to the most celebrated naval vessal of WWII. The USS South Dakota was dismantled years ago, but many of her parts are preserved in an outdoor museum in Sioux Falls. Inside the museum, there are photgraphs, ammunition shells, flags, and other pieces of its history. The ceiling is even... More

It truly shows size of the Battleship in its hayday. I would gladly go again when its fully open and warmer out. Plenty of parking!

If you like historical things, this is the place to see - though if you are looking for an actual battleship, this is definitely not, but it is a memorial to all the heros on the most decorated battleship of WWII - the stories of some of the lives lost or the heros who lived through and became purple heart... This memorial rests squarely in town and is a neat memorial shaped like a battleship. I liked the authenticity, large replica canons, and the fact that this memorial is set alongside a sports park on one side and major businesses on the other. I would not have expected to see something like this here!

Th memorial and museum were free. The length of the battleship stands in front of the museum and the museum items and store were a great history lesson.

This is about the best one could do for a battleship memorial in the middle of a prairie- not like it's really practical to bring the whole ship here! It's basically a concrete outline of the vessel with items from the ship and related displays and information. It's certainly worth seeing if you're in the area and have the time,... More

Very cool place to stop and step back into time. Tons of pictures and items from the USS South Dakota and from the sailors. The gentleman that was working there was very fun to talk to and had tons of stories. Make sure you get a chance to chat with him! The whole memorial is modeled to look like the... More

If you've never been to a port where you can tour an actual battleship, the full-sized concrete outline gives you a good perspective of just how huge the deck dimensions of battleships the class of the USS South Dakota are. Opal, a very patriotic lady, greeted us inside the museum and was a wealth of information about the history of... More
