Clean. Easy access from parking area. Uncrowded. Nice breeze.
If you want to swim there are NYS lifeguards. If you want the quit peace of an open beach and sound of only the ocean waves, take a small walk.
Even as a senior, and a non camper, I enjoyed the 3 days we spent here. The sites are large but family didn't read the fine print and was disappointed there was no water, electric, campfires allowed, or grills at the site. I was afraid of ticks but didn't see any. The Park itself looks very inviting to explore. Unfortunately the place is infested with ticks so you cannot walk, hike, mountain bike, etc. without a fear of coming in contact with ticks. We walked right out after 10 minutes of watching people pull multiple ticks off their dogs,and themselves.
My wife and I visit this beach each year while staying on Shelter Island. This requires a ferry trip and a congested (usually) ride through the Hamptons. Its a State Park on a Beach. Whats not to like? A lot of people camp here in the summer. I'm not telling you when the best time of year is, I'm a local...but walking on the beach and enjoying Montauk is always time well spent.

The waiting liner for a reservation here is a long one, but one you should get on years in advance if necessary. This Park is special, right on the ocean, with wonderful amenities and near some great towns.
