Taos Plaza has lots of shops, lots of touristy stuff and also some really good stuff. I stopped into one shop to buy postcards and came out with postcards and a pair of earrings which cost me less that $25--sleeping beauty turquoise studs. I feel confident in saying that since I know what to look for. The owner was very... More

we went for the lilac festival, there where no lilacs, wife was a little bummed, but they had some nice old cars and trucks that I liked and quite a few venders selling art and other stuff ,I had a good time.

Due to the surrounding landscape among other things, this "town square" area seemed different than the standard places one visits. The shops, the people, the adobe and the architecture, the Mexican style food--all make it a place one must check out, for sure!

Lots of arty shops, lots of good and great places to eat, but all very touristy these days. Has kept its look and feel better than a lot of these historic type places and if you have a wife that likes shopping it will certainly while away an afternoon.

Okay, fine. It's for tourists. But nothing beats a great t-shirt, and there are plenty. Also lovely jewelry shops and funky shops selling all sorts of local crafts. keep looking outside the immediate plaza, along the main streets, and you'll be treated to outstanding galleries and shops.

Before a trip to Taos, I suggest reading "Long Quiet Highway" for a portrait of a town that might have been. Our trip begain in Phila, where there were no direct flights to Alburquerque NM. We had a 3 hour layover in Chicago. It was a grueling drive from the airport to where we were staying, north of town. I... More

The plaza is picturesque. The entire area for a few blocks around is easy to walk. There are definitely the tourist traps in the area. For us, the best shopping was just off the plaza. There are some artists co-ops that offered variety within a single shop. For pottery, we were most impressed with Cisneros Arts (off the plaza, just... More

Maybe it's not as exciting on the 4th or 5th visit but I think the economic downturn had an impact on the quality of businesses in the plaza area. It's still worth spending much of a day there.

The plaza is a quadrangle of shops and restaurants (plus one or two hotels). You can easily spend a day or two here. I highly recommend Acuarelas Studio and Gallery.

The plaza itself is very lovely, nice benches, trees and lots of shops to look at great art in, as expected. There are many nooks and crannys here to look around in, so take your time and enjoy.
