Easy put in at the east end. Watch out for boat traffic but lovely islands to paddle with plenty of landings for lunch. Wind can be tricky.
Each island in Casco Bay is unique. They are beautiful and quite wonderful. Take a ferry ride and walk or take your bike to explore. They each have open restaurants in the summer. Stay for the day or get a hotel room. Pick one island and explore or take the Casco Bay ferry and do a round trip back to... More
We spent 4 days in Portland. We chose Portland because they advertise as dog-welcoming, and it really is! We brought our dog on the Ferry. We took the Diamond Island ride, it was May and sunny. The ocean air was cold, we can see why the city folks would travel to Maine for a respite from summer heat. Wear your... More
Just a 30 minute ferry ride from Portland's lovely waterfront, Peak's Island is one of Maine's Island gems. Not only is the ride scenic, arriving there, walking up the hill and experiencing the village atmosphere and little shops makes it a hidden gem. Our favorite watering hole is Peaks Island Bed and Breakfast, where one can have a nice dinner.... More
Very inexpensive ferry trip to Peak's Island. The ferry service runs almost every hour. Peak's Island is a great place to hike around with gorgeous views. If we had know, we would have reserved a golf cart which is a great way to get around the island. Very quaint small town feeling. There is also bike rentals on the island... More
We used to visit these islands in our own boat, but now we use the ferry. We get a senior discount and can ride the boat to all of the islands for the same fee. Go to Peaks and take a walk or bike around to see how the summer people live. Have a lobster roll. Go to Diamond Island... More
Catch the ferry at the Casco Bay Lines terminal for the 20-minute ride across the water to Peaks Island. Considered part of Portland, Peaks Island is one of the few islands off the coast of Maine to have year-round residents and an elementary school. According to locals, it is quite busy during the summer months -- busy by Maine standards,... More
We have often taken the Casco Bay Ferry to Great Diamond Island (Diamond Cove) to visit friends. It is a pleasant ride, stopping to take on and let off passengers and cargo at other islands. Depending on which ferry you take, you may stop at Peaks Island or Long Island on the way, and get more flavor of Casco Bay... More
Want a great way to spend an afternoon or evening in Portland? Visit the islands for dinner or just go along the "mail run" on a Casco Bay ferry. What a great way to experience the Bay, get some peak tanning time and see the summer folk.
