The former home of notable Bowdoin College and Maine hero Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (his christened name was Lawrence Joshua Chamberain) was due to be auctioned off in the 80s. Falling to pieces, crumbling, suffering years of brutal neglect at the hands of the mostly student renters who lived in it, a courageous and young historical society raised the money to... More

Well informed staff will take you through all the rooms of this period decorated home. The full history of Chamberlain including his tenure as president of Bowdoin College and terms as Governor of the State of Maine are included.

What I liked was the layout. Each room was decorated to convey a different subject, and almost every single article in each room had a story. The docent, while brand new (this was her first tour) and clearly nervous, had just as clearly done her homework, and made up for in enthusiasm what she lacked in fluency. All of our... More

Tours done by volunteers, but we were given personal attention. The house has some unique features and Chamberlain is a most interesting historical figure.

The Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum is a two story frame house adjacent to Bowdoin College, the only home Chamberlain and his wife Francis (Fannie) ever lived in. Still under ongoing restoration (saved from destruction in 1983), the docents make the day, providing a chronological structure to Chamberlain's amazing life: Bowdoin graduate, Civil War general, hero of the battle of Gettysburg,... I have a hard time processing and remembering history. However, my daughter loves it and she is 13. She had gone here on a field trip with school so we went as a family because she raved about it so much. It did not disappoint. I was able to comprehend, appreciate and understand Joshua Chamberlain's role in Maine and am... More

Joshua Chamberlain was one of the little known generals in the Civil War, but certainly one of the most active. Lord knows how many horses he had shot out from under him, .... and Gen. Grant close him of all the generals to receive the surrender of Gen. Lee and his army. His career after the war is presented extremely... More

But you don't have to be to enjoy this tour. Chamberlain's is a great story and worth learning. Besides being one of the heroes at Gettysburg, and besides becoming president of Bowdoin College right there in Brunswick, he becomes governor of Maine. The history of the house as well as the man is also important. Make a point of visiting... More

If you are a Civil War enthusiast or have an interest in Maine history, you will love this museum. It was beautifully laid out with lots of memorabilia but plenty of space. It also provides a wonderful example of true Maine character.

the tour guide we had was excellent - he talked for an hour. I thought the entrance fee was reasonable.
