Steven Spielberg's controversial 1997 film, "Amistad," shed new light on the ship's history: en route from Havana, 53 West African slaves fought a bloody battle to take over the slave ship, only to be recaptured in America before they were eventually freed. « less

The kids really enjoyed climbing all over this ship and hearing about the crew and "cargo". It's agreat way to introduce them to history. It's real life, not just an old story.

Aboard the Amistad on her maiden historical voyage from Mystic Seaport, I and my wife learned about a part of this country not taught in schools but lived in the dark hold of a slave ship in the waters of the Atlantic.

We have climbed aboard several time, but it is always on the move and will not likely be in port during your visit.

This vessel is no longer open to the public at Mystic Seaport. I am happy with the Seaport, which is a great place to visit.

A tall ship intrigues me all the time. There is an unmatched beauty in it. Fun to visit. A learning experience.

You can see the boat. It is docked up, still in the water. It is under renovation and you can not gather any info abt it. This is the 3rd time I have tried to see the boat in 2 states since she saw water and I still not able to climb upon her.

This ship was built on-site at the boat building facility in the Mystic Seaport Village. Saw the movie. Impressed seeing the actual vessel.

Unless you have a lot of time probably not worth a long trip just to see the ship - it is a reproduction and not a lot to see - just the upper deck. But definitely worth seeing when it is at Mystic Seaport.

My wife and I boarded the Amistad during the recent Wooden Boat Show in Mystic (June 24 to 26, 2011) The 'crew' on board were friendly, outgoing and very knowledgeable about the history of the Amistad. The ship is in great shape although having sustained some damage during a recent voyage (the top masts and bowsprit were removed). It is... More
