Over 1700 petroglyphs carved on boulders at an ancient, sacred Indian site. It is located in the Hedgepeth Hills just north of Phoenix. There is a very interesting museum explaining the geology and anthropology of the area and includes a brief introductory movie by ASU professors from the Dept. of Anthropology. . The petroglyphs were carved over many thousands of... More

I met my friend out here with her 3 yr old and I had my 4 & 9yr old. The 10 minute orientation video was informative but very boring for the kids. The museum is well done and kept very well. The trail was nice but considering we almost signed up for the "desert flower tour" we didn't see many... More

This is a nice urabn park (only a few miles off I-17). It costs $7/per person (can get a AAA discount) to take the 1/4 mile trail and view the petroglyphs. The small museum is informative and there is a short movie. We found the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Painted Rock Petroglyph SIte, located about 12 miles west of... More

The small museum was informative and the tour of the rock art was nice. One of my highlights was to actually throw a spear with the atlatl. I was surprised at the amount of leverage the atlatl gave to the throw of the spear.

This attraction is not well known, but when you go there you will find out who runs and staffs the museum. It is a beautiful attraction, and well worth the drive. Evidently you can also bring picnic lunches there and spend hours. The sides of the hills are covered with petroglyphs of ancient dwellers in the area, and the museum... More

I love the workers and volunteers at the center. Brian U. is very dedicated and always has something interesting to share. The volunteers are engaged and friendly. We visited during one of the festivals and enjoyed the music of a native American band. My 17-month old great niece danced and danced! Very interesting and fun place to visit!

Way out in the NorthWest of Phoenix - totally worth the drive. Only a 1/4 mile walk from the visitor's center (do spend $1 for the rented binoculars if you don't have your own) to the mound where over 1500 pictographs adorn almost every rock. This spot was visited and decorated by people over a very long (really 2000 year... More

You visit will take maybe only an hour. They gave us a very personal tour of the volcanic rock with ancient writings. It was interesting but we came when the sun was shining on the rocks so much of it was hard to see and the man said we could come back for free and recommended to us to make... More

The Deer valley rock Art Center is near Phoenix . The Center was created to protect the petroglyphs (very old rock carvings) at the site. The place is nicely situated with quiet surroundings and nature lovers will have great time here. A variety of plants and animals are found here. There are several parts to this Center. The viewing theater, the museum where some photos of the petroglyphs are displayed, the children's area where there are activities for the kids and the 1/4 mile trail where you can explore the petroglyphs and pictographs in their natural setting. Some of them are already faint and may be difficult to view. You may... More
