This museum is easy to reach via the trolley that picked us up at the pier. We were on the Statendam. It is worth the time, filled with the history of the area. Across the street is the Hammer Museum, another worthwhile stop.

Although it was winter and there were very few visitors, the museum was disappointing - we saw a far better museum in Sitka. Too much stuff by local school kids on topics not related to Haines. A waste of time really
The museum was inexpensive and very interesting. We were able to chat with the guide and learned the history of the Haines area.
Nice and interesting museum, not too big. Allow 1- hours. Buy the combined ticket for all 3 Haines museums. (If you’ve found this review helpful, you can let me and others know it by clicking the green Yes below)
A trip to Haines is not complete without a visit to this museum where you will find great examples of native American handicraft and art, interesting artifacts and a fascinating collection of photographs. Do talk to the staff and ask them questions. They are quite knowledgeable and have the time to really answer your questions. The cost is only $5...

Visiting the Sheldon Museum in Haines, be prepared to spend some time looking at the amazing exhibits and learn about the local native community. Fort Seward, the first military installation in Alaska and built in Haines is remembered and documented with great exhibits. Highly recommended while touring the town.
There are a lot of small town museums scattered around Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and BC. We stopped in several on our extended trip to Alaska. The Sheldon Museum was OK - it was not bad but it was not something special. We spent about 1 hour there and that was plenty of time to see everything of interest.
This is a small place, $5 admission. Sheldon was a local who became a collector and was respected by the community, including the local tribes. We were taken with the respect with which things were displayed. Not fancy, to be sure, but informative and well done.
Note: unless we didn't see it, there was no elevator. The displays are on...

There are gallery displays of art from local artists as well. The gift shop has an excellent array of high quality original silver pieces from local artists as well as high quality carvings and the typical...
