At first I was hesitant to do this because I'm a little claustrophobic and also scared of the dark. I didn't want to miss out on an opportunity though and was so glad that we went! The cave is quite large and the only part that was pitch black was when we turned off the headlamps for a few minutes.... More

The tour was excellent, the tour guide very knowledgeable and we had lots of fun. The birds are really great, being in the dark cave and hearing them clicking was an unusual experience. So make sure you are not afraid of the dark. We even swam in the cave (not the one with the birds). It was lighted by candles... More

We first visited Anatakitaki Cave in 1987 and had forgotten about the rugged but spectacular walk in to the cave! The jungle growing from huge slabs of makatea make it almost impenetrable but for the guiding of Marshall Humphries. While the cave interior is interesting, the highlights for me were the behaviour of the kopeka, the walk in and around... More

You walk through a kind of jungle and get information about the geology of the island. It's an adventure to climb into the cave, but your always save! Marshall is an excellent guide with a lot of knowledge, not only about this cave, really worth the money!

Exciting trip, and so informative, we knew nothing about these birds until we visited. The journey down into the cave is itself quite an adventure, although nothing too difficult, can even go for a swim in the pool at the bottom if you want to brave the colder water, I did!

This was a high point of our trip - the hike to the caves is definitely not easy - be prepared and wear heavy shoes - but worth it

The walk with the guide is challenging over old coral (very uneven) and down into the cave but worth the effort. In the cave you see the Kopeka bird and in another cave (part of the same cave set) you can even go for a swim. They have put some candles in the cave making for a romantic scene. Tip:... More

Hard to say if the cave is what I won't forget or if it's the tour guide Marshall. Wikipedia? No way, Marshall is better. He rarely doesn't know the answer. You'll love that tour guide. Just ask him what you want to know. Doesn't matter if you ask questions related to the tour or in general about Atiu island. His... More

There were only two other people in my tour group, which made the experience all that more intimate. The birds here are fascinating and the underground pool was eerie, but refreshing. There isn't much of a pathway, so a guide is well-worth the price. Also, the hike there over razor sharp coral is a bit worrisome.

I am very claustrophobic but it was well worth suffering for this tour. The caves are very impressive and the little kopeka birds are amazing, clicking their way in and out of the caves in the darkness and avoiding all the stalactites and stalagmites., Amazing. And you get to go to a bush beer drinking session afterwards! superb.
