It's depressing to see animals in bad conditions: a small and unsanitary cages for them, many of them were lonely. There are no guides you have to go over the pace alone, not appropiate place for eating.

The last time I went there it was depressing to watch the animals in such conditions and the smell is terrible. It must be one of the worst zoos I've been.
nice for 1-2 hours with our kids (4 and 7). small, beautiful birds, fat jaguar. somewhat undermaintained. in a sketchy neighborhood, so kids got an education in prostitution and street drugs as well. "mommy, what is that guy putting in his nose?" but didn´t seem unsafe in daylight hours.
I went there beacuse I love animals, but the park is somehow forgotten, no much manteinance. It is a good place to go if you have lots of time in San Jose and want to spend some time walking.
Do not go here. Costa Rica does not have any zoo experience and / or support to take care of animals. Your best bet will be go to a Nature Forest to see some animals.
The zoo itself is good, and ocated right in the center of San Jose. It is really pretty and you can observe a wide variety of animals. The only thing I found not that good are the cages. They look small and uncomfortable for the animals
There is just no way for me to agree with having encaged animals, and this place just happens to be something like "devil's island" for them.
I feel that animals are very nice, and that they should be free. There the have animals, but their space I feel is not enough.
I was appalled at the way the animals are kept, particularly the pathetic Jaguarundi, elderly jaguar & dreadlocked Lion in their small exposed cages. It should make this country ashamed, with all their hype about protecting & respecting the wildlife this once National treasure of a botanical garden has fallen into desuetude, thoroughly neglected. There is plenty of room to...

These zoo it is the only attraction for the costa rica people, it is a good example for the world that no matter how you want a zoo to be it will always be a " carcel " jail for the animals, that is why the ticos don't keep animals for pets, because it is a disgrace.
