Beautifully preserved stone masonry, a bunch of artillery pieces, and great exhibits in the interior of the fort. I love the views looking at the Gulf while standing on the ramparts. I love how they usually have some re-enactors in full gear during the summer. The great thing about it is that it is within walking distance of the ferry...

We really enjoyed the tour, especially our 9 year old granddaughter. There are approximately 26 sites and information is provided in a brochure. It is a self guided tour so you can go through at your own pace. The grounds were very well kept. My granddaughter really enjoyed the tour and asked a lot of questions.
My husband and I visited Fort Gaines while camping on Dauphin Island. It was a wonderful surprise to find such a well-preserved historic landmark. The self-guided tour is easy to follow and informative. I think kids would really love it. Very enjoyable and highly recommended!
If you go to Dauphin Island the fort is a must. We go every time we come to the island. In the last 10 years we have stayed on the island for spring break 7 times. The dads all go and take the kids and the dads read all the "boring" stuff while the kids play army/war in the fort....

This is a great fort to visit. Lots to explore on your own & they have some workers there in costume too. At 3:00 or 3:30 they fired a cannon which my boys loved.
Very interesting Civil War site, especially when compared with inland and northern Civil War Sites, noting the island differences. Must see for most but especially for civil war buffs.
Fort Gaines was built in the early 1800s and was involved in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. The fort is mainly of brick construction and features several archways that highlight this material. A self-guided tour takes you to all areas of the fort. We found it to be most interesting and could almost imagine the soldiers...

This fort is steeped in history. The views from the fort are absolutely breathtaking. You can actually walk through the various rooms and tunnels. Very interesting. It is hard to imagine what life must have been like for those that called the fort home. A unique and humbling experience.
Whether you're a history buff or not, you will enjoy the self lead tour of the fort. If you plan ahead, they have reenactments at various times throughout the year which bring things to life! I'd recommend going early in the morning or late in the evening if during summer due to the heat.
