I'd never been to Toji, just never got around to it on previous visits. We were able to go inside the pagoda (not usual as I understand it) and we paid ¥800 as an entry fee rather than the expected ¥500. If you like Buddhist statues and history, this temple ranks up there with the best as the oldest in... More

In an unlikely location, the site is split into different areas and you can chose and pay for the ones you want to see. The 5 storey pagoda is the best one as it include two other temples - one with 101 budha statues. The pagoda was impressive from the outside but small and shabby inside. The gardens were great... The concierge at our hotel thought that the first-Sunday-of-the Month market at Toji was mostly crafts, well, there were about 2 or 3 stalls of that, but the vast majority were antiques. It isn't as huge and sprawling as the market on the 25th of the month at Kitano-tenmangu, but they still have a great cross section of things. There... More

One of the many , many, many temples in the area .But this strike out as its wooden pagoda like structure ( about 50m high ) is unique . The temple ground is large . There was some praying ceremony going on when I was there ( as a Muslim , I did not went in ) A place to... More

Late on a Sunday afternoon, I was able to enjoy the beautiful grounds of the Toji temple. As you visit other sites in the city, you may well see the five story pagoda nestled on the temple grounds. I had a chance to witness a monk lead a family in prayer in one of the temples. The religious deities, prayer... More

This is one temple that is not on the radar screen of most tourists but is worth visiting especially when cherry blossoms is in full blooms. If you are staying near Kyoto station, it would be a shame to give it a miss. Facing New Miyako Hotel ( south of Kyoto station ) walk to your right towards AEON Mall. At... More

Toji Temple is a 10-15 minute walk from Kyoto train station & is home to the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan. The garden around the temple is lovely & has a pond with koi fish & some beautiful cherry blossoms.

As others, in this one you can enter (not climb) on it. It is located in a beautiful Garden área. Take some time to visit and, if possible, to have contact with the monks who lives there.

The Flea market is held every 21st of the month. We were there quite early...probably around 9am. There are few methods of going to Toji Temple..buses are cheaper HOWEVER if you are travelling with kids, take the cab. The cab was probably about 600 yen from Kyoto station. 1st experience with the bus...it was so pack..and travelling with stroller-no-no in... More

This was the first important temple I visited in Japan and it overwhelmed me. I agree that it is expensive and probably it's only worth if you're interested in Buddhism (especially in traditional Japanese Mikkyo Buddhism). It has the biggest wooden pagoda in Japan and frankly, just to see this is worth the visit. I consider it a must-see in... More
