I went up Volcan Baru at night (started at midnight to see the sunrise). The hike is VERY demanding - bring a lot of water. Also I had to pay $5 for the 'national park fee'. That felt really awkward since the trail is poorly maintained and there are no facilities at all... More

What a great park! We'll hope they'll have more visitors to justify providing more services, such as interpretation and a visitor center with regular hours. More

We climbed Volcan Baru from the Paso Ancho/Cerro Punta side. I would strongly recommend using a guide for this adventure. We used Jorge Lopez, who is based in Volcan. People have been lost in this area for days. Only some of them were found. I would also strongly recommend that you have at least some experience hiking/climbing in good-sized mountain... More

This National Park borders International Park La Amistad, over one million acres of biosphere reserve. The trail along the union of the two parks is simply sublime! More

We did this hike from Paso Ancho - and started from the main road. We reached the peak around 10:00 - and camped a couple hundred feet down from the summit. Unaware of the robbery issues, we did this hike without a guide. It was easy to follow the trails and find the water source halfway, but if robbery is... More

This is a tough hike - there is a service road (of sorts) to the top. It is 13 brutal kilometers over rocks, mudpuddles, and calf-aching climbs -- And so completely worth it when you get to the top and see that incredibly beautiful view. The birds, flowers, natural rock formations, and breathtaking scenery is superb. We spent the night... More

We felt like Sisyphus for awhile, but once we reached the top, it was worth it. We left at midnight, but do to some ill equipped group mates, we missed the sunrise from the top. We were lucky and had a clear day. You can see the Pacific and Caribbean from the top. It is tarnished by all the communication... More
