An afternoon's outing while staying in Swakopmund. It was an extraordinary place and surprisingly interesting. It would have been useful, on the information sheet given with the permit, to have had distances to look out for the beacons. Driviing out of the part at sunset was a challenge for the driver (you are going due west) but provided some stunning... More

Depending on how you like your cup of tea this drive will NOT appeal to everyone. I think young children will find it extremely boring however, if you are into geography you will love it. The "Moon Landscape" and the Welwitschia plant was were my highlights.

If you are going along the drive past the Luna Landscape, you go to the place in town and get a key for the route signs. Along the route are numbers. Each one has a story about that area. The Welwitchias are the last stop on the route, its worth it to go and have a look although really these... More

An easy drive, accessible with any car. The moon landscape is fantastic, the welwitschia's interesting. Remember to get a permit in town - we didn't know about that, and were stopped - unfortunately the park ranger was clearly angling for a bribe, but thankfully we didn't bite, and he let us off with a "warning". Unfortunately the signage does not... More

We did the drive in September 2011 after picking up a map and permit in Swakopmund city. It is a fun drive to do and the Welwischia is definitely a unique plant. The map provides information about the landscape and the various desert plants that grow there. Very interesting to pass a couple of hours with!

The Welwitschia Drive is definitely worthwhile while in Swakopmund or Walvis Bay. There are 13 markers along the drive that explain the different things you can see in such a beautiful and eerie landscape. Make sure you go all the way to where the oldest Welwitschia plant is. We were a little disillusioned by all the mining and likely polluting... More

It's inexpensive to get a pass from the local council. The drive passes through different types of desert terrain, the moon landscape being a highlight. The council provide an information sheet describing what to look out for at each of the numbered stopping points. There are some great photo opportunities. It doesn't take long to complete the drive but beware,... More

We felt very privileged to have been able to see these amazing plants! `The scenery was absolutely stunning and well worth the dirt road drive!
