This was one of the main reasons for me to visit Banaras, but I was little disappointed to see not so great collection. The gallery that showcases handwritten notes of major Indian literary and national figures is the best. Sculptures are good but not documented. Banaras gallery showcasing the masks could be better. Staff was very rude and un-cooperative.
Situated inside the BHU(Banaras Hindu University Campus), it an museum with lots of arts and artifacts. Most of the college students and travellers who enbraces the knowledge of Arts, History should visit this place once. One of the gems of varanasi !!!

It's a huge campus with temples inside it where students pray before attending classes. We went early and a large group practiced yoga, our guide also taught us a lot about the Buddhist and Hindu religion. I think that was our best dive away in the Buddhist and Hindu religion.
An incredible collection of miniature paintings, a real education in the history of that art form. Outstanding sculpture collection as well. You will be alone or almost alone with the treasures. The museum closes early, so plan accordingly.
I visited this place twice ,one of the exotic collection of art.I was more than surprised to see change there in terms of cleanliness, lighting and display...kudos to Mr. Sharma...
Dirty, but they have unbelievable stuff. You need at least 2 hours to go through it all. First go to the rooms that are locked up early.
