The Roman ruins at Salonae, while not extensive or complete, have the advantage of not attracting crowds of tourists, so spending an hour or two here is pleasant, interesting and doesn't have to be rushed. They are a rich complement to a visit to Split and will increase your understanding of life in a Roman city of Dalmatia. There is no... More

If you have never seen Roman ruins, it is worth a stop. The ruins are completely exposed and unprotected, unlike many I have seen before. There are signs nearby that provide insight as to what you are looking at.

From a historical point of view, it is a very interesting place to visit. That a man from the town can end up as Roman emperor is truly amazing

Salonae is a Roman archaelogical site a few Km. from Split. It can be easily reached with a bus from that city; after visiting the ruins, you can return to Split or continue to Trogir with another bus. Apart from Roman ruins, Salonae has ruins from an important paleochristian city. The site is interesting and set in a lovely area,... More

There is actually nothing to see, only few rocks scattered on the lawn and on the few places you can see very foundations of the ancient city Salona.

We went to Salona on the local bus from Split, it takes about 20 minutes and is worth it. It's not clear which stop to get off so ask someone on the bus & they'll tell you. It was the main Roman town before Split was established and there is plenty of ruins to explore here, surrounded by some amazing... More

A must see site of the previous capital of the Roman empire in Dalmatia. The site is somewhat unkempt and there much more to be uncovered. It rained hard whilst we were there and there is little or no cover from the rain or the sun, so we did not see everything. The Romans built the amphitheatre, theatres, temples, baths,... More

I have been here many times and each time I am amazed that the site is not promoted more vigorously. It is amazing that such a site exists and that visitors can freely wonder around, climbing over the ruins at will. There is a nice cafe just outside the entrance. Go early morning or late afternoon as the heat of... More

I took the local bus from Split and I must admit the site wasn't easy to find at first. No big signs directing the way. It's a lot bigger than I thought and could get tiring if walking around in the heat of the day. The amphitheatre is furthest away from the entrance but worth the effort. Plenty of excavating... More

It's hot in the summer, even in June. Relatively easy grounds to walk with the opportunity to view Roman ruins away from the hustle and bustle so common around many similar sites.
