Our mission is to inspire, inform and entertain through the universal language of cinema arts and to serve as a cultural and educational resource for all. The core of our programming at Amherst Cinema is first-run independent film and classic repertory. We show over 120 superb films each year - most are first-run gems not even considered by commercial cineplexes. Decisions about film selection are made by our programming experts who know film and who know our audiences, not - as with many multiplex theaters - by a central office in a distant location. HISTORY 1926: The Amherst Theater opened in a renovated livery building in downtown Amherst, MA. It screened many classic films and hosted occasional stage performances. 1955: the theater was sold to Samuel Goldstein and renamed Amherst Cinema. Through the 1990s, the building deteriorated due to a lack of basic maintenance. The theater closed in 1999. 2000: a group of local film buffs and arts lovers formed the nonprofit Amherst Cinema entity to save the historic structure from the auction block. With substantial help from hundreds of individuals, institutions and businesses, the group raised funds and developed plans for a cinema center. 2006: With help from hundreds of supporters, we raised nearly $3,000,000 for the Amherst Cinema's home. In May 2006, our nonprofit organization broke ground to build a new, state-of-the-art, three-screen cinema. The Amherst Cinema opened November 22, 2006. 2013: A new studio theater was opened adjacent to the main building. « less

Very nice stadium seating, nicely decorated, very clean, great movie selection and terrific snack bar amenities like italian soda, beer and wine in addition to fresh popcorn. We're going to make this a regular night out.

Amherst Cinema is a locally-owned theater showing the best of modern independent films, both American and foreign, in an intimate, comfortable theater. They also hold retrospective film events, and sometimes bring in speakers related to their films. Worth the trip.

They get a good mix of the smaller new releases, and pick interesting revivals too. Ticket prices comparable to the bigger places, and the concessions are tasty. I wish the screens were a bit bigger, but there's not much to be done about that. One thing that I find annoying is not their fault, but it's amplified by the small... More

Always something I want to see there. It feels European with the concessions. Only problem...if you're local, you're going to meet a lot of people you know!

Great movies, wonderful little theatres, fresh popcorn. The Amherst Cinema Arts Center consistently offers the best of the Indy and Alternative movies.

We saw Moonrise Kingdom here and really enjoyed it. The theatres are small and intimate (though a little tight.) They serve wine and local beer and are also a non-profit showing independent films. We visited on a Wednesday night and it was packed - so get here early! The movie was great too!

Skip the chain theaters and go to Amherst Cinema when you're in town. The offer a nice selection of indie and independent films, film series, in addition to some of the big movies. The concessions offer a variety of yummy snacks you won't find in the big theaters. My only warning would be that the theaters are small and there's... More

I've visited many large cities (in 3 countries) that aren't fortunate enough to have such a well-run theater showing independent film. The special events are particularly wonderful -- the nonprofit that runs Amherst Cinema (and Pleasant Street Theater across the river in Northampton) brings in directors frequently during the academic year to present and discuss their films. Last month, in... More

You won't find the latest blockbusters here at Amherst Cinema, but you will find thoughtfully done films with general appeal. Stadium seating is fairly comfortable but lacking adequate legroom. Concessions are delicious: REAL butter on the popcorn, for starters.
