We loved walking along the beach in the town of Llanquihue. Very peaceful with beautiful views of the volcano in the background.
It seems to be a paradox but the Lake Llanquihue seems to begin in Puerto Varas. Going by its right edge, you can enjoy the scenic beauty of this lake, passing by Volcano Calbuco at right. In approximately 50km you will reach Ensenada where you should stop to enjoy the view. Continuing on this road, you will have access to...

The lake was beautiful, we were here in early fall. Pack a sweater or sweatshirt for early morning but the sun will burn off the clouds by 2pm and it will warm up. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, bring good walking shoes and enjoy the views.
The day we were there it was very windy and the lake was rough like the sea. There are a few grand hotels on the lake which looked like they might be nice to stay there. I did not go in any of them. The town is small and as we drove around parts of it reminded me of NZ.
The best way to enjoy the lake is by car. With the car you can go around the lake in One day and visit most of the attractions. Puerto Varas, Frutillar, Llanquihue and Puerto Octay. One of the most popular restaurants is the EspantaPajaros, close to Puerto Octay on the main road. We didn't think it was great but far...

All the lakes in this area are linked and create a super overall experience which is both the same but different as you travel around and on them in the various boats including catamarans as we travelled onto Argentina via boat & coach. A must do trip
Chile is as unspoiled now as America was 150 years ago! What a beautiful country. Seeing these clear lakes and lush forests makes me marvel at how farsighted Chile has been in creating their national parks. Bravo!
The lake is easy to visit without a tour.
There is a regular stream of collectivos" that pass through Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas, llanquihue, Frutillar and up to Purraranque.
Just find the nearest "parada" and pay the driver (try to have correct change). The collectivos are large minibuses. You might have to stand in high season.
If you want to...

Beautiful rolling countryside and promontories on one side, dramatic mountains and volcanos on the other, stunning views, interesting little towns like Puerto Varas and Frutillar. Wonderful base for a holiday, with lots of opportunity for active stuff like kayaking and cycling around volcanos if that's your thing, but plenty of flat places to walk and good restaurants if that's more...
