If you live in warm Florida you are bound to appreciate this man. A doctor who wanted to cool his patient suffering from a high fever so he built a contraption that pioneered the way for modern air conditioning. A true HERO in my book! This should become a pilgrimage for Southerners. This ice making machine idea of his is... More

There is a model of the first machine to make ice, used to alleviate suffering from Yellow Fever. This may sound strange, but one of the best things about it was a science project done by a 13 year old girl, which was on display. She had done a tremendous amount of research on ice making, air conditioning, and refrigeration,... More

How could someone invent an Ice Machine in the 1800,s. This is something that every American should know about. Thank you Dr. Gorrie for all of the lives that you saved. The Carrier Air Conditioner People accept you as the inventor of Air Conditioning. Please, anyone that may read this, if you are ever in this area, go to this... More

The John Gorrie museum is only one room but contains plenty of imformative exhibits. The ranger was very helpful in answering our questions and made the tour worth the $2 admission. Dr. Gorrie's grave, monument, and church he helped to found are just steps away from the museum and are worth checking out.

Charming area with an amazing history. Nice Park staff to help answer questions. Very small but worth the $5 and 30 browse.

When visiting Apalachicola, we have stopped by the John Gorrie State museum and found it to be a nice little place. If you enjoy history, you'll like it. It's cool (no pun intended) to know that a guy from my state of Florida invented air conditioning. I LOVE my A/C and every summer here in FL, I walk into my... More

Small little museum, but it's always fun to learn something new. Who knew there was a place dedicated to the man who invented air conditioning and the ice machine? It's nice, but only takes about 5 minutes to go through the whole place. John Gorrie's grave and a monument are also right across the street.

Airconditioning and ice machines owe everything to John Gorrie - and here's a museum dedicated to a man who literally changed history in Florida, as well as in the medical communities. A good bit to see and do - and though museum is small, it's informative.

A Florida State Park Museum it gives a good overview of Dr. John Gorrie and how he came to invent the ice machine. There is a very good video that tells the story of how Dr. Gorrie wanted to find a way to cure/eliminate yellow fever and malaria eventually resulting in his inventing an ice machine. This invention’s impact was... More
