We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience not just a journey. We have the Overlander train connecting Auckland and Wellington, the Coastal Pacific between Picton and Christchurch and the world famous TranzAlpine from Christchurch to Greymouth. The TranzAlpine goes through the fields of the Canterbury Plains, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the Southern Alps, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth. « less

Having had mixed reviews from people before we left, we hoped the trip would be more positive than negative and it was!! From helpful and informative staff to gorgeous scenery, even in the rain this was a really enjoyable trip. We left the train at Greymouth but even if you just go there, have lunch, then jump back onto return... More

A great way to sit back in large comfy seats along with the headphone commentary to watch the stunning scenery pass by the huge viewing windows A walk to the open viewing carriage is most breath taking. (remember camera) Was a little disappointed with the dining carriage this does not seem like it has been updated being very noisy and... More

We were on a grand tour of New Zealand, and getting from the east coast of the South Island to the west coast by train meant that we could ditch the hire car and both fully relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery of that part of the country. The carriage was comfortable, with large panoramic windows. There was good food... More

A very relaxing way to travel with magnificent views. A free audio service available of the history of the land, and the observation carriage a bonus too. A perfect way to travel from east coast to west coast of New Zealand

Myself and travelling companion cannot speak highly enough of this train trip. We travelled on a winters day after a fresh snowfall and the landscapes we passed through were varied and spectacular. One of the nice aspects of this KiwiRail trip as opposed to others we'd been on was this one stopped at a couple of the better stations and... More

Just a stunning - must do trip. Shame that NZ Rail does nothing to make the train modern and a classy - to justify the fare. Maybe the view is if we keep using the same wagons they will become historic

Great trip. Reminded me of Oslo to Bergen. Windows were very large and clean. Open observation car was great for pictures. Onboard services were good. Would like to have known more about the stops that could have been made along the route from Christchurch to Greymouth. Very good value ticket.

We had been recommended to do this trip by a few that had travelled the South Island - so pleased we did. The comfortable seating - great breakfast and coffee. The windows nice and big to take in the view. The observation deck perfect for the out side photos. Truely a highlight of our South Island trip. Highly recommended.

It was a wonderful trip. We had driven to Greymouth on a previous visit but this was relaxing and spectacular scenery. We loved it.
