I went on the crossing just a week after the entire trek was reopened and it was gorgeous. As long as you are prepared for the wind, sun, cold, etc. it is very enjoyable. I repeat, as long as you are prepared! I over prepared and was glad i did!

This legend trek is not for those who are not healthy, both physically and mentally! And it was true with us. Strong wind, rain and fog welcomed us to Tongariro Crossing Alpine. Some parts of the trek were dangerous and we had to crawl through. However, after spending 9 hours there, it was one of most amazing thing we had...

We decided to do this trek on our recent visit to NZ and we were so glad that we did it. The trek starts in tongariro national park at Mangatepopo car park and ends at Ketetahi car park covering a good 19.4 km. However due to volcanic activity the part of trek after blue lake was closed and we had...

With the pre-booked minibus we were collected from our lodgings and drove up to the carpark with toilets. The bus drive to and later pick-up required a 30$NZ per person; expensive but saving two dull hours walk. The carpark was early closed for free parking and some people who were not in time were send back to the road. That...

I visited the tongariro crossing and areas surrounding on recent trip to New Zealand. I did not do the crossing but the views from the lookouts were spectacular, the volcano is becoming active and the sight of the smoke against the blue sky and the lake in the foreground was magical.
Actually, this is my first great walk i did (by walking) in NZ, the first one was Abel Tasman by kayaking....
I did this walk in 3 days 2 nights instead of officaially say 4 days.
I started from Whakapapa Village, did a 3 hours walk to the Mangatepopo Hut, was relaxing on the first day. I thought I was...

Whilst at present the whole track is not accessible because of the recent volcanic activity it would seem that the most notable sights are still readily viewable. Amazing contrasts of scenery are abundant and a reasonable level of fitness ensures you can cope with the very steep "Devils Staircase" vertical climb of 600metres. Sturdy tramping boots or good quality hiking...

Against my better judgement I decided to do the Tongariro Crossing. From previous hiking experience in Patagonia I would rate myself as a poor hiker. Three people in my tour group were going to do it so I took courage that we would all support each other during this adventure. Right out the gate from the parking lot those three...
