From 1919 the South Australian Farmers Cooperative Union made the site famous by producing cheese, butter, margarine and small goods, which were recognised worldwide. This activity ceased in 1976. From that year, the buildings lay abandoned until 1990 when the current proprietors and directors, Joy and Graeme Foristal arrived. With 1940's era chocolate and confectionery making equipment, they began their dream making old Australian favourite chocolate and confectionery. The complex developed from there and is now known as 'Heritage Park' and has become home to other cottage industries. Visitors today find the old cheese factory transformed into a large emporium styled confectionery factory shop. This is a centerpiece for 5 different rooms, where various manufacturing processes can be viewed. These are the Chocolate Room | Depositing Room | Packing Room | Panning Room | Toffee Room. Visitors are encouraged to speak to the staff who have mastered the use of the heritage equipment, making old fashioned favourites in the time honoured tradition. Old favourites such as, Inch Licorice Block, Traffic Lights and Rocky Road. To tempt chocolate lovers, there is the constant aroma of chocolate and confectionery being made.....yum! An additional interesting feature is the collection of antique and quaint memorabilia from times past, which can be found on display around the factory walls. All in all, this package makes the factory a popular family attraction as well as a significant Hill's destination for families, groups, charters and interstate, national and international visitors. « less

The Melba Chocolate Factory was an unexpected stop along our day trail from Adelaide to Hahndorf. There is a huge variety of high-quality chocolate goods here and prices are reasonable. Some observation areas allow visitors to see the chocolates being made. Staff are friendly and willing to answer questions without hesitation. This is really worth stopping for.

If you've got children with you or imagine you have children, this place is worth a visit. A short (30 minutes) scenic drive through the Adelaide Hills brings you to the old Woodside cheese factory which has been converted into a Chocolate and Lolly Factory. Watch the kids faces as they first view a factory floor stocked with every Australian... More

We stopped in randomly while doing a scenic drive, it was a pleasant surprise on the route. Large variety of chocolates and confectionery. You can watch them making some things depending on the day you're there. Well worth a visit if you like chocolate or lollies!

We were there on a Tuesday afternoon and it was quiet. We could look into some of manufacturing rooms, but no tour. It is not only chocolate, but also all types of sweets. Some of the chocolates were laid out for tasting. The one I liked was coffee with a white chocolate coating. We also tried the chilli dark chocolate;... More

Mostly over priced confectionery and really didn't have time for a tour, which might have been interesting. Managed to get some china cups on special which made good last minute gifts with lollies inside.
