This is different to an art gallery in that the captions are a bio of the subject, rather than the techniques used by the artist, or the artist themselves. I liked that. Gallery rooms had a good flow, and told a story with different rooms for different time periods. We visited the special exhibits: portrait awards 2013 exhibit and the... More

It was so much fun to put a face to a famous person and place name! The building that holds the portraits is light and airy and the parking is very conveniently located.

Excellent selection of portraits relevant to Australian history, well arranged chronologically. Very good selection of self-portraits too, this I feel is important part of a definitive portrait gallery & they are arranged together unlike London where they are scattered throughout. If you wanted to be critical perhaps too much emphasis on the 19th century to the detriment of the 20th.... More

My 8 year old son accidentlyy came too close to one of the busts on display and triggered an alarm. The attendant gave him such a chewing out (becasue she would have to fill in a report) that we haven''t been able to get him back into a gallery ever since

I spent 2 hours here - between the normal exhibits and the exhibitions. There are fun portraits of pop stars, interesting historical figures and some modern day heroes. A great way to 'meet' all those who have made Australia the lucky country it is today

I visited the National Portrait Gallery a couple of days after Chrissie Amphlett died and, sure enough, there was a portrait of her with an up to date profile attached. How efficient is that!

The Portrait Gallery has so much to offer - you will never be disappointed! Firstly, it's a great piece of modern architecture in Canberra, so archi-lovers will enjoy the exterior, and interiors too. I am more drawn to portrait-style art, despite not being artsy at all, so I always enjoy a visit here! The current photographic portrait exhibition is just... More
