Traces of ancient earthworks, dating to the early Iron Age, surround the fort, enclosing an area of about 5 acres (0.02 km2). The fort itself was probably built in the early centuries of the Christian era. From the 5th to the 12th century AD it served as the royal seat of the O Neill sept of Aileach; it was destroyed by Murtogh O Brien, king of Munster in 1101. To make the demolition complete, the king ordered each of his soldiers to take away a stone from the fort. Grianan of Aileach was reconstructed by Dr Bernard of Derry in 1870, but archaeologists are doubtful about the inner restoration. Surrounding the stone fort are three concentric low walls which formed part of the original fortification of the fort. « less

This now peaceful place is the stuff of legends going back to the Bronze Age or early Iron Age. It is a magnificent circular stone structure with ramparts and when you look around you on a clear day you can see several counties. Magnificent and easily accessible with car pak. More

This is a must see if your in the area. Its has stunning views and you have to marvel at the work that went into the building of this fort some 2000 years ago. I have spent lots of day up there just marvelling at the beauty of the surrounding countryside! However recent repairs spoilt the building itself, they look... More

We missed the sign for the turnoff at first but it was well worth a finding. It's a little tricky navigating the narrow uneven steps. We saw only one other couple coming and going up the road to get to it. It was free and besides the interest of the Iron Age Fort, it provided one of the best views... More

Not easy to find, very minimally signposted but if you find it, you'll never forget it. I don't have any pictures of the view from the fort as my camera died but I managed to get a few of the inside. It is on a private property and it is generous of the farmer to let visitors on his land.... More

We visited the ring fort on a windy and cloudy day in early spring. Despite being almost blown off the hill by the high winds that day, we greatly enjoyed our visit to this free attraction. The views of the surrounding fields and hills are great. It is only a five minute drive away from the main road so, if... More

Whilst its ʻancientʼ origins have been somewhat compromised by some rather extensive renovations/rebuilding by a well-meaning local in the 19th century, this is nevertheless a fantastic place to spend half an hour or so. Fantastic views over the wonderful Inishowen peninsula can be seen from here. The day we went it was clear blue skies, windy and superb. One of... More

This is Ireland. From the view atop the walls, to the sounds of the nearby farms, to the smell and feel of the mists off the sea nearby. A haunting place that will never leave you. Slainte! More

Grianan Fort dates back to the Iron Age. It is known to have been connected to the O'Neill chieftains of Ulster from the 5th through the 12th centuries. In 1870 it was rebuilt/restored. More information is available at the excellent interpretive centre below the site. Grianan is very well worth a visit. It was a favourite spot of my late... More
