The cathedral sits high on a hill overlooking the town and its surrounding landscape. It's claim to fame is the "Bamberger Reiter", a statue of historic background
Well worth a minimal hike from old city. The cathedral has several interesting doors that a guide will unlock better than a guidebook. Inside are wonderful tombs, statues and two differnt styles at each end. Surrounding buildings make the whole complex very interesting.
This cathedral was founded in 1007 and it stands high on the hill overlooking Bamberg city. It is very large with many tombs and large stone sculptures to see but I found it also very dark and dull inside. The architecture is a mix of Gothic & Romanesque.
Bamberg is one of the most beautiful cities in Germany. It has been preserved (like Heidelberg) from bombing during WW2 and therefore is very well preserved. The cathedral, Little Venice, the old city hall are all well worth visiting. The cathedral (called Bamberger Dom) is a building from the early Middle Ages, with 4 towers outside. The interior is imposing,... More
the interior is clean and the whole internal structure is spacious. Feels like a plain romanesque-gothic church, free from influences that sometimes makes churches feel more like museums. If you are lucky, you can listen to the organist rehearsng for the next concert or mass. don't miss the Prince's Portal outside.
This church combines two styles of architecture with the older part Byzantine and the newer part Gothic. Two saints are entombed in the Byzantine section in elaborate tombs. The famous Bamberger Reiter (the Bamberg Rider) statue is located in this church and adds to the folkloric character of the place. It is not the most spectacular church that you will... More
Nothing particularly special but worth a look around. When I was there it had an interesting display of modern art which although it didn't really fit in with the church was interesting to look at.
The Dom is located on one of the hills in Bamberg and is a must-see. It is an impressive old church with notable graves, a crypt, and numerous statues including the famous "Reiter" (horseman) that is visited by thousands of people each year although nobody knows who he was...
Beautiful cathedral inside and out in a beautiful town .Deep in history ,a must see if visiting Bamberg.
The cathedral is spare considering the Barroque opulence of Bamberg; however, it boasts the tombs of an Emporer, Emporess and a Pope! The most famous sculpture is the Bamberg Rider - a complete enigma beause no one knows who made it, why they carved it, and who it depicts. However, there are many many other works to admire including a... More
