We saw one gallery with the help of a wheelchair but other galleries were in another part of the building and we only saw them after a prolonged argument with staff. At last one lady was very helpful and pushed my friend up a steep ramp meant for cars - a victory! We really enjoyed the statues & frescoes in... More

The main museum is still closed and under construction. Some of the main finds are exposed in an annex building, but some of them have already disappeared to be installed in the renewed exhibition. The temporary exhibition is not really nicely presented and up to date. Nevertheless, the disk of Phaistos (festos) and some major objects of Minoan Art are... More

If you have an interest in archaeology this is a MUST. Inexpensive and one of the only attraction in Iraklion this is a nice way to spend an hour. It is under construction but most things in Crete are. It is two floors of actual artifacts and in Crete we have found that hard to find with all the recreations... More

Guide book says it was open. 2 Hotel receptionists checked and said it was open. Went the night before and the notices on the doors said it was going to be open. Turned up with 5 others and it was closed. A newly printed paper computer sign was stuck over the existing saying the revised times. Posted the morning of... More

Museum is being reconstructed, so only a few of the exhibits are available. What is there is excellent.

Under renovations, only a fraction of the collection is available to view, but it is remarkable and informative, and well worth the few Euros to get in.

...at 3pm on a Tuesday. Ridiculous. Plenty of other frustrated and exasperated visitors at the door. A poor employee who came out to get on his scooter and go home was given an earful by the gathered crowd.

A natural pairing with the Knossos and Phaistos archaeological sites as the artifacts from these sites are displayed here including tablets with the Linear A script from Minoan peoples. Keep your ticket from Knossos to gain admission here.

We first found a part of the museum that has free admission, with sculpture and frescoes, and the attendant didn't really direct us to the remainder of the museum, on the opposite side of the building. So we were fortunate to find the "main" exhibits, which are amazing, including the famous Phaistos Disk and wonderful ceramics, jewelry, fresco fragments, etc.... More

I really liked the frescoes and the artefacts in the main building though it is not well signposted and very few people stemmed to realise that the frescoes were upstairs in the main building. The temporary exhibition was excellent but in a small space and very overcrowded.
