This is the most well known monument in Lisbon. You have to visit. Inside there is a small gift shop and a movie with headphones for different languages. It's short and very educational. You can also walk up to the top of the monument to get a panoramic view of the city. A must!

This Monument to the Discoveries is relatively new, but wonderful. The tile in the plaza around it is amazing, making you feel that you are walking through waves. The map shows the places Portugese sailors discovered and the dates. Well worth the 20 minutes it takes to wander around and get a few photos.

You go all the way to the top (thank God there is an elevator but if you feel like it you can take the stairs) and simply enjoy the 360º view over the river Tagus and Belem. Best at sunset. They usually have an exhibition on the ground floor as well but is temporary so how good it is depends... More

Looming high above the Tagus river this is a pretty impressive example of stone masonry skills and definitely worth seeking out. Lots of buses and trams come this way so it's very easy to reach. The detail of the carving of the explorers and navigators it depicts is fantastic and with a backdrop of brilliant blue sky, the river and... More

One of the jewels of Belem, this is an impressive monument to the navigators and pioneers who set sail for the new world and also to those who supported/sponsored them, located on the shores of the river facing the ocean. Another hugely popular tourist spot, best visited late morning when crowds aren't too bad, the light is good and one... More

I wrote about it on "Belem" review so I'd not repeat myself. I guess my husband and I enjoyed it very much. We just hope that the major of the town will read our review, considering moving away those horrible traffic signs which ruin all photography pleasures.

When you travel the coastline of Portugal you can well imagine the curiosity and courage of those early explorers who desired to leave the safety of their shores and venture across the seas to explore the unknown. This monument captures that spirit and is well worth a visit. One can feel the desire for discovery when viewing the monument. Quite... More

It is a long way to walk form the centre but there are plenty of buses and trams. Probably not particularly worthwhile on its own but if you are going to Belem anyway, well worth a call.

The beautifully carved monument placed on the banks of river Tagus, pays tribute to Prince Henry the Navigator. Built in the shape of caravel, it shows the Prince accompanied by 16 figures on each side, representing historical characters connected with Portuguese Discoveries. Inside, a small museum showing information about various discoveries. Also good panoramic views of the city. Great picture... More
