Great place to get lost and explore the winding streets of old Lisbon. Not a lot of commercial activity when we went (no cute boutiques or other local places, seemed mostly residential), but a really beautiful part of the city that is worth exploring on foot.

Take the trolley/tram #28 all the way up and enjoy the views. You can easily walk down from there as it is all down hill.

We stayed in the Alfama and wished we had more time to explore the tiny alleyways. We did find 3 very good restaurants within walking distance of our apartment.

Definitely you should see it. You've got a feeling that the time over there has stopped-old buildings, atmosphere.

Dont go with a big group. You will be annoying and likely wont truly enjoy it. But do go and take leisurely strolls through the neighborhoods. Say hello to the local residents, most of whom will speak no language other than Portuguese but will be friendly and smile. Stop for a coffee and perhaps pick out a pastry. The churches... More

Some may say that the heart of the city is Bairro Alto, or some other neighborhood - but for me, I would say that it is Alfama. Jose Saramago, Portugal's Noble-prize winning novelist, called Alfama "a mythological beast" and commented regarding the tourist's quest to get to know the neighborhood, "in the secret of its houses there must be a... Alfama is purely magical. You can lose yourself for hours walking the streets and soaking in the living history of this area. It is full of little restaurants, great views and rich with textures. Bring your camera!

This is a fun place to get lost in!! The local restaurants also offer "Free Fado"....but it isn´t really free because you pay a lot for the drinks....(12€ for a large beer, 30€ for a small bottle of wine). But the Fado is authentic and the food isn´t bad, so it´s much better to enjoy Fado here than in one... More

Very interesting stories behind Alfama and also, the cobbled streets, winding little roads and red rooftops are all typical of this old town. Go with the walking tour of Alfama and you will definitely not forget some of the stories told, the half day walk will be more than worth it!

This is a very characteristic hilly neighborhood with many narrow streets, outdoor cafes and authentic Fado restaurants.
