The Hermitage is lauded as place where St Fracesco's meditated and found peace. You really can see why that was. The Hermitage is nestled in the foothills Mt Subasio cradled by the slopes of two steep hills forming that opens to restful view of the Subasio plain below. The site is much revered by the locals and the authorities alike... More

walking up to Eremo delle carceri is a truly spiritual experience. The quiet and peace I felt was incredible, and the place is full of history and sacral atmosphere, without the luxury, but with a real contact with the nature.

Even if you are not a Catholic, this is the place where St. Francis and his followers stayed and prayed...take a taxi from Assisi, you won't be sorry.

The trail leading up to St. Francis' hermitage is steep -- you will need good shoes going up, and even more so if you go down. But the views are breathtaking and the hermitage is a wonderful site to visit. Be sure not to miss the statues of the three monks, each studying the stars in his own way. As... More

It was a long, winding road up to see very little at the end. Took longer to get there than the visit actually took. Only visit if you have seen everything else in the area or a real St. Francis fan.

I liked the peace and spirituality of this place, you really feel close to St. Francis and his deep love for all the creation. It is so beautiful to walk in the woods, along the paths and among the other pilgrims. You can feel the force of faith and prayer.

What a quiet, peaceful and reverent spot this is. Takes you right away from the hustle and bustle of Assisi etc. We didn't want to leave.

Challenging uphill hike 4 miles, or take a taxi. Beautifully quiet and serene. Excellent place for a picnic outside the official Eremo area. Gorgeous views on the hike.

Perhaps the place where one today best can get an experience of the mood of St. Frances? Do walk there, it is a very nice walk up the mountain, through the woods.
