This was a pleasant rather serendipity visit. The library and staircase were elegant and functional, and there was an exhibition of the three Books of Hours made for the Medici daughters, beautiful little jewelled books which combine a calendar with a prayer book and other useful medievalia, and lots of illustrations. There were replicas which could be handled and pages... More

If you can't get enough of Michelangelo, you shouldn't miss this. Yes, it's one more entrance fee, but this may be the most famous staircase in the history of art. Michelangelo turns architecture into sculpture in the vestibule of this library. The reading room itself is just gorgeous, and there's likely to be an interesting exhibit in the rotunda.

Not a lot of tourists visit the Laurentian Library, and most of the ones that I do usually know about it because they are fans of Michelangelo (like me). The library was designed by Michelangelo himself. The vestibule and the staircase was a sight to behold, but the reading room was no less magnificent (and well-maintained!), although no books were... I really enjoyed the Michelangelo designed library racks and the collection of illuminations were very nice.

I agree with the other reviewer who said this was "a must see." It's lovely and tranquil. Don't forget to walk to the end of the library and through the door where there is a large exhibition room with more incredible books.

The library is lovely, but without some context you won't necessarily be able to appreciate the history. Of particular note is the staircase leading to the library. Michelangelo created the staircase, and it's amazing. Obviously, not everyone will appreciate a staircase, but if you have any interest in architecture, it's worth a trip.

The street and market outside were crowded and hot, the New and Old Sacristies had lots of people in them, but we were alone in the huge reading room of the Laurentian Library and on "the staircase". If you show any interest at all, the docent is charming. She told us about the Michelangelo design of the room and system... More

I've wanted to visit the Laurentian Library ever since studying art history in high school, just to see Michelangelo's famous staircase in the vestibule. The space is much more cramped than I'd envisioned, but the staircase is pretty amazing. The library itself is gorgeous - old reading benches (also designed by Michelangelo) and stained glass windows full of Medici symbolism.... More

This is the one spot that I missed last time I was in Florence. You absolutely have to see it. Michelangelo designed the entrance - a dark, vertical room that leads to a bright, lit by stain glass windows library. The books are not there, they're in the back... but to see that they had essentially desks like podiums where... More
