If you're in Florence to see the sights, the Santa Croce is perhaps among the top places to visit. In addition to the spectacular frescoes and other art, it contains the burial sites of Michelangelo and Galileo, among others. Dante is not buried here, despite suggestions that he is. This is Italy. Announced closing times are not necessarily actual closing... More

This church has the tomb of every major scholar and political thinker you'll ever want to see. Really cool history here. Also close to a smaller leather market than the one in the center of the city with less crowds and tourists. Easy to get in and out, didn't have to pay to get in or wait in a line.... More

Avoid going here after about 3-4pm in the fall or basically after the sun dips westward. The shadows cast on the church do not lend itself to take good pictures. Also more con artists eg using AIDS or UNICEF as excuses to get money from you. Be aware. Very close to the Pinocchio store. :)

Audio guide a must as it explains so much about the tombs and the people buried here. Famous people and interesting histories fill this cloistered church. Beautiful.

The front facade is amazing, the interior very good and the cloisters, gardens and School of Leather courtyard are splendid. It is more important to have a gander at this than, say, queue to go into the Uffizzi.

We spent a good two hours at Santa Croce, and it was the highlight of our stay. We had audio guides, which were really helpful, but there is so much to see and experience take your time to take everything in.

Beautiful memorials to Michaelangelo, Galileo, etc. Not to be missed! The exterior marble however, dates from 1863

When we visited this cathedral I was basically expecting to visit a few graves of famous Italians like Michaelangelo, Dante and Machievelli, I wasn't expecting to also be treated to some frescoes by Giotto outlining the life of St Francis and also a visit to the leather school where artisans were at work. This place is well worth a visit.... More

The church has a beautiful marble front. Inside you will find the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli amongst others. It was also interesting to see the predecessor to (or inspiration of) the Statue of Liberty.

This is not the busiest part of Florence which is nice but it is definitely a must see. There are a few very famous people buried here in the church including Galileo, Michaelangelo, and Machiavelli.
