But the square has long been a lure for massive numbers of pigeons, drawn by the massive numbers of tourists who readily feed them. While the tourists happily post for photos amid the flock, there are concerns that the birds' presence--and what they leave behind--will damage the centuries old architecture and art work. « less

A night visit is most worthwhile! Music from bars was wonderful. Lighting of buildings is perfect. A special evening in Venice.

Step back into history. Must see. Beautiful preservation of art history. Even on a rainy day! Should be on everyone's bucket list.

This square is very special and unique, with the best tourists attractions and most significant buildings of Venice on the square. You will see the life of the most powerful people here, and you'll be impressed by the size of the buildings and their detailed designs. TOO MANY PEOPLE. Go there early if you want to avoid that.

It was stunning. And it was also shocking that something that enormous could be hidden in behind all of the small alleyways it takes to get there. Highly recommended, even if you don't take a tour. It was awesome just to see.

I would give this 5 stars if it were not for the thousands of tourists squashed into it's ancient grandour. Simply no where else on earth like this. see it before it sinks beneath the waves.

We would have liked to have sat and have a coffee in St Mark's Square and although it was expensive, the main reason we didn't was because of additional charges: most of the cafes/restaurants had a 5 piece orchestra playing, however we then found at when we sat down for a drink at one of them, that they charged you... The square is seems even larger after snaking down the narrow roads of Venice. It has such a great atmosphere and was worth the trip!

It was a very hot day and crowds of people but able to sit around side and listen to the orchestra from the very expensive cafe without having to pay to do this..

My wife and I just happened to stroll through the plaza at 10:30pm to the sound of orchestras playing, couples holding hands. Very crowded during the day but absolutely perfect in the evening.
