In Bergamo Alta you are transported in another age. Just let yourself wander in the alleys and do not forget to take the funiculare to St. Vigilio.

Probably as fine a collection of religious and civic buildings around a single piazza as you will find anywhere in Italy.
I really liked it here, narrow streets of cobblestone, old medieval houses, churches and cathedrals, fine restaurants and cafees. In a fact, this city was amazing.
It was raining the weekend we visited but we had a great time wandering about the lanes, exploring the castle, tasting the cakes, and stopping for coffee, lunch and dinner in the cafes and restaurants!
The Bergamo's Citta Alta is amasing mixture of warm Italian culture and the coldness of near to german speaking people. Great architecture and interesting atmosphere around.
The wonderful architecture. Fun going up in the funicular. Lots of good bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. Lovely churches, all open with very grand interiors -all worth visiting. the only downside were the pigeons !
Loved the whole visit to Citta Alta. The narrow streets, amazing bakeries, artisan shops, views from Bell Tower and so much more. A place to just wander and soak up the atmosphere. We wish we had stayed in the Upper Town. It has a great atmosphere and there are several excellent restaurants. This is a place to visit for a long weekend break aand probably no longer. Apart from restauants and cafes/bars the p;laces to see can be done in 2 days.
