To repeat other reviewers, the road is busy with zero shoulder, except on Sunday when the road is closed. Other reviewers who say it is easy to get there are not exactly accurate. You must study a bus map and understand bus stops and routes (and may need to research online), and maybe even the metro routes and stops. If... More

We visited the "Appian Way" twice. The first time getting the bus as far as the church of Domine Quo Vadis. The road was far busier than I expected, and I found the guidebooks confusing. More by luck than anything else we found ourselves walking through the Caffarella valley portion of the Parco Appia Antica. The Valley was lovely with... More

The Appian Way is beautiful and a great way to enjoy some quiet just outside of downtown Rome. Getting there was simple by bus and didn't take long at all. We tried to go to one of the catacombs while we were there but we got there at 4pm and the last tour had already left. The only place I... More

Very impressive to walk on one of the first roads built by the Romans for their army. You can start at Circus Maximus, but the first part of the road up to the San Sebastian Gate is just like any other part of Rome. Even the section from San Sebastian Gate down to Church of Santa Maria in Palmis (also... More

You can walk the cobblestone road to the walls and gates of Rome. Very cool. It's about 1500 meters with extensive villas and private estates on each side. There is a small museum in the old gatehouse at the end (or start if heading into Rome). This gives you an idea of how big the city was from the center... More

During the time when Rome was on the rise then begn building roads, the first cilization to acomplish this amazing feat and they were all built the same way and after watching many documentaries about this and that i realized that i had encountered roads of this sort in different places throughout Italy, if you watch any footage of there... Lot's of people are a little disappointed when they first see the Circus Maximus in Rome; Basically all that remains is the shape on the ground it once occupied but you get the idea of its size. If you'd like a more personal view of an ancient Circus may I suggest you look up the Circus Maxence on the Appian... More

From metro station Pirmaide take bus 118 to Via Appia. Second stop is in front of the bike rental. Only mountain bikes are available. First part of the road is shares with traffic and not very intresting, second part much better with many interesting historical sites. Biking is not easy and the need for mountain bikes became clear. Restaurants along... More

We went on a rainy Saturday and it turns out you can't hire bikes if it's raining which we thought was ridiculous. We decided to walk to the catacombs so the day wouldn't be a complete waste (we really wanted the bikes). The walk is pretty unpleasant as it just seems like another road with lots of traffic, we may... More
