between Sperlonga and Gaeta this is a wonderful archeologic site. There is a fabulous small museum whose director is very friendly. Stop at museum first then head down to grotto. The statues in the museum are really impressive.

Sperlonga clearly was a holiday resort in the time of Tiberius. His holiday villa was discovered when the tunnel was being dug into the mountain for the road. The locals resisted attempts to move artifacts to Rome and created a little museum beside the villa. Much of the original villa walls and floors can be still seen including the cave...
