Valle Gran Rey is a beautiful 'away from it all' resort on the South West coast of La Gomera. It takes some getting to but is definitely worth the extra effort. The resort is laid back and very friendly, with good access by bus to other parts of the island making it easy to explore by bus, by car, or... More

Valle Gran Rey means "valley of the great king" and is a steep canyon-come-lush palm grove that opens out onto a wider coastal strip with some fairly attractive beaches. Apparently at some point in the past (1960's?) it was discovered by hippies and became somewhat of a isolated retreat, hence the alternative lifestyle themes around the place that hang-on today.... On the west side of the island. The best place for sunset on the canary islands. Lots of shops and restaurants for a village this size. It does have some German influence which for me is ok, but I guess not everyone feels the same.

We stayed at Jardin Tecina in Playa de Santiago. We booked two 'hikes' through our Hotel Reception with Timah, €30 each. Thankfully, we had brought our walking boots and walking poles from home - both walks were a serious endeavour! On Thursday we completed the Forest of Fables, 9km. You need to wear walking boots and have considerable stamina. This... More

Basically a German colony in La Gomera, with hippies everywhere (lots of them German). Personally i quite like hippies and germans, and the views here are incredible. A friendly place in an awe inspiring location, just beware the locals who really weren't friendly at all....

only hippies here, not really anything to see/visit the road descents into the valley, which is nice, but it is better to stay around hiking than to 'visit' this one

Valle Gran Rey is a mix of amazing nature, and beatifull landscape. Driving is very exaiting. The road is mostly very narrow (althought in very good condition) and with many turning sometimes 180 grades. Moreover there are tunels without the light inside. The view on the valley is impressive. The valley is hudge. The speciens of plants change depend on... More

The only town worth visiting in La Gomera. Ambient, laid-back, nice international restaurants, hippie-mood, nice beach, great sundowner-restaurants, cheap motels and the hotel Valle Gran Rey is nice, not too expensive, great location, the only thing is you gotta go with a car if you wanna see the rainforest. Otherwise you can also hike around VGR. Nicest town in the... More
