One of the best and more interesting in the Basque Country, and in the centre of the old quarter. Check out the surrounding area for the venerable buildings close by the cathedral.

This was truly the highlight of our short visit to V-G. We booked the restoration tour online at the Santa Maria website. The guide must have been a trained engineer herself since she knew so much about the construction and history. catedralvitoria.com/ingles/visitas_reservas.… It was such a memorable experience to see the excavated areas, walk across the scaffolding, squeeze through the... We've all heard about the Guggenheim museum, the playa de la Concha, etc...But for those of you who like me enjoy historical sites, medieval architecture, and cathedrals in particular, Santa maria in Vitoria-Gasteiz is a must see. I don't think there's anything quite like it anywhere else. In this cathedral, open to the public to show the restoration works, you... More

We didn't go on the guided tour but on the cheaper (2euros?) "visit on your own" option. They give you a helmet and a 20-pages book of explanations about the works they are doing and the history of the cathedral. I think the guide is saying more or less what is written in the book (I could hear what he... More

In my opinion this cathedral is fascinating! I love to feel like an archeologist discovering the misteries of the architectural problems of the building and the history of the city! It is a brand new point of view when visiting a temple.

Touring Vitoria, a beautiful city, without this tour would be a regret. The tour does not take very long, it is available in Spanish and English, and it covers a lot of history, architecture, etc.. The efforts being made to save this cathedral are quite impressive. The cooperation between interested parties is also impressive. Go, enjoy.

Santa Maria Cathedral is located at Calle Cuchilleria, 95. Santa Maria Cathedral is also known as the Old Cathedral. The church is located in one of the highest points of the old walled city, on top of the hill. In 1200 the city was taken by the Castillian king Alfonso VIII. He was responsible for ordering the church to be... More

Fascinating tour to view the cathedral under renovation. Pre-book your tour and you get to choose the language- (Spanish, Basque or English) although the English pronunciation of the guide was a little difficult to understand at times but questions were answered and everyone was very friendly. Look for the statue of Ken Follett outside!

This visit of the cathedral that is being renovated is really spectacular. You see and understand the construction and renovation flaws made over the centuries of this building's existence. The cathedral will be open to the public again next year, so make sure you see the renovation work before then.
